Jie Shen

Ph.D Student

Jie Shen 沈劼 is a Ph.D. student in Chinese Archaeology, in Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Stanford University. She mainly focuses on the crafting technology of bone artifacts in ancient China. Using the use-wear analysis, residue analysis, and experimental archaeology, Jie explore the variation and development of bone crafting techniques, and how the crafting industry involve in the social progress such as the formation of early state. Also, she is interested in the religious and political meaning of animal-related artefacts, which are significant for understanding the human-animal relationship.

Jie works in Chinese archaeology and osteoarchaeology, especially focusing on exploring the technology of bone artifacts with experimental archaeology methods.

Jie received a BA Degree in History at Wuhan University. Then she studied in Regional Studies – East Asia Program at Harvard University and received a MA Degree.
