Gary Hung

Ph.D Student

STANFORD UNIVERSITY

Gary Hung 洪崇傑 is a Ph.D. student in the Chinese Archaeology program at the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Stanford University. His main research focuses on ancient human migration, human-animal relationships, and environmental adaptations through isotope analysis. He is particularly interested in the Austronesian dispersal and the Tapenkeng Culture, which shaped the early Neolithic movements in southeastern Asia. Through analyzing human and faunal remains, he seeks to apply interdisciplinary biomolecular methods to explore the matrix of early migration networks and, subsequently, define their connection to broader adaptation behaviors and dietary changes between early Neolithic China and Taiwan. Gary is currently working with the organic materials from Taiwan, with a special focus on dental calculus.

Prior to joining Stanford, Gary received his MSt in Archaeology from the University of Oxford (2020) and a joint BA in Anthropology and Archaeology & Heritage Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University (2019). He then worked as a research assistant in Taiwan between National Cheng Kung University and the National Museum of Prehistory. Gary has also done fieldwork across Canada, Jordan, Taiwan, the United States, and Ukraine.
